The Psychoanalytic Study of Time
Kim Hae-Nam

Abstract
Human are time bound beings. And perception of time is essential to build our mental structure. To perceive time means to perceive the reality; furthermore it means to perceive the concept of oneself which is consistant from past to present. As the time pass, people are faced with unavoidable loss in their lives and by accepting it, they became more mature. People perceive time in two different ways, realistically and psychologically. Realistic time is observed by looking at a clock or a calender. And it consist of continuity and regularity. However, psychological time depends on principle of pleasure, and it is jumbled with past, present and future. These two different types of time create realistic and fantasy world, sometimes by colliding or complementing each other. The perception of time is much affected by state of mind. If an impulse originates in id, people conceive time flow very slowly. On the other hand, when an impulse comes from super-ego, human conceive time pass much quickly. In addition, the difference between these two perception of time depends on level of other stimulus and its acceptance. These factors are reason behind why people feel as if time passes more quickly as they get older.
